After an unsuccessful six-month loan spell at Girona, Olympique Marseille (OM) have now loaned goalkeeper Pau Lopez to French side Lens until the end of the current season, the French club said on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old Catalan, a two-time Spain international, will play the remainder of the season with the iconic northern French club, who will have an option to buy for an undisclosed sum. The Espanyol youth product is hoping to relaunch his career at a mid-table side who are not playing in Europe this year.
In his last loan spell, the goalkeeper hardly played any minutes at Girona, the club he joined after the arrival in June of Italian Roberto De Zerbi, who preferred the Argentinian Geronimo Rulli in goal.
Pau Lopez has also played for Tottenham and Betis, who sold him to Roma for 23.5 million euros, considered a high price for a goalkeeper. From Italy he went to Marseille, who bought him from the ‘Giallorossi’ for 12 million and was the team where he played the most games in his career (127) between 2021 and 2024.
