Everton slipped into the relegation places after the Premier League penalised them with a 10-point deduction. A breach of the Championship's profit and sustainability limits took their toll on the Toffees.
The concern, it seems, has been passed on to other clubs in England, who are similarly in the spotlight. The Sun' opened its pages with the sanctioning of Everton and warns that Manchester City and Chelsea could be next in line to be punished.
The points deduction for the 'toffees' has come as a bitter pill to swallow and, according to the newspaper, has created a certain amount of fear at City and Chelsea, who even fear that relegation is looming over their heads.
Stefan Borson, a sports lawyer and former financial advisor to City, warns the aforementioned clubs. "10 points deducted for Everton may seem harsh for a simple Financial Fair Play infringement, but I would argue that sanctions against City and Chelsea could lead to relegation."
Another lawyer, Simon Leaf, stressed that this sanction is historic in the history of the Premier League. "It's going to cause a shock, especially in the boardrooms of Chelsea and City. It is the first time in England that a points deduction has been imposed for breaching Financial Fair Play rules," he said.
Everton have been deducted 10 points for a single case, but City are reportedly being investigated for 115 possible offences. As for Chelsea, the Premier League is investigating whether unrecorded payments were made during Roman Abramovich's time as manager. The Blues have already been fined 10 million euros by UEFA for the lack of "financial information".
