Chelsea's defensive stalwart Wesley Fofana may not feature again this season after manager Enzo Maresca revealed the extent of his hamstring injury. The 24-year-old French centre-back sustained the injury during Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on 1 December, in a challenge with striker Ollie Watkins.
Initially expected to be out for "three, four, five weeks", Fofana's condition has since been reassessed, with Maresca now describing it as a "big blow" that could sideline the defender for the rest of the campaign. "Unfortunately he could be out for the season," Maresca stated, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding Fofana's return.
The injury comes as a significant setback for Chelsea, as Fofana had been a consistent presence in the starting lineup, featuring in 12 of the team's 13 Premier League matches this season. While surgery is not currently required, the extended absence of Fofana will force Chelsea to reassess their defensive options for the remainder of the season.
The loss of such a key player at this stage of the campaign presents a challenge for Maresca as he looks to maintain Chelsea's defensive stability in the coming months.
