In the run-up to the start of the Spanish Super Cup, Spanish football was surprised after the CSD granted Barcelona a precautionary measure for the registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, whose licenses expired on December 31st because their current club did not have the corresponding 'Financial Fair Play'.
However, the 'Cule' club was able to enter the famous 1:1 rule just before the end of the year, although the money did not arrive in time. After the refusal of La Liga and the RFEF, the Catalan club relied on this to obtain provisional permission for reasons of force majeure.
However, this did not sit well with the different teams. The first of these was Las Palmas, who were joined by Atlético de Madrid a few hours later. The 'Colchoneros' expressed their total disagreement with this decision, considering that it “jeopardises the current system, questioning the rules of the game”. In addition, they consider that “a very dangerous precedent is created, as it opens the door to break the rules and incur in the serious mistakes of the past”.
Atletico Madrid wants to show its deep concern for the situation generated in Spanish football after the resolution adopted this Wednesday by the Superior Sports Council. We consider that this decision jeopardises the current system, questioning the rules of the game.
The Sports Law itself includes and protects the economic control of La Liga and, however, with this resolution it is put at risk. La Liga's economic control has been the main tool that has managed to turn our soccer into a solvent sector, a process admired internationally.
Our club, like all members of La Liga until this resolution, has been complying with the rules of economic control and we will continue to respect them. In fact, in order to be able to compete at the level we have been doing in recent years, we have decided to carry out various capital increases, despite the enormous effort that this entails.
This government intervention creates a very dangerous precedent, as it opens the door to skirt the rules and make the serious mistakes of the past. Atletico maintains its commitment to rigor and responsible management. Without clear and equal rules for all, no fair competition is possible," reads the statement.
