Pau Cubarsi is undoubtedly Barcelona's surprise package this season alongside Lamine Yamal. Although the latter rose to fame first, it is the Spanish centre-back who is the most talked about product of the Catalan side's youth academy recently.
Due to the injury casualties in the Catalan giants' defence Xavi Hernandez was forced to put his faith back in the youth system, and was pleasantly surprised to discover the potential of 17-year-old Cubarsi, who has put in some incredible performances as a starter in La Liga or in the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Napoli.
In fact, this led him to be in the starting eleven of the 'Cules' against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the UCL quarter-finals and the young Spanish centre-back was once again excellent, earning praise from his coach.
"Pau Cubarsi is an incredible player. He’s been world class... guys, it’s not normal for a 17 years old to perform like that. I ran out of words to praise him. He's at an exceptional level. He competes like an older player. It’s just insane," the Catalan coach told reporters.
