The worst Man United since the 1986/87 season
Manchester United are experiencing their worst season in over 30 years. With just 23 points, the Red Devils had fewer points in the Premier League after 20 matchdays only in the 1986/87 campaign, the first under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United find themselves in 14th place with 23 points from a possible 60 in the Premier League. Seeing only six teams behind them in the table is something a club of United's calibre are not used to, highlighting the horrible stint that the Red Devils are having this season.
To find a worse record after 20 matchdays, we must go back to the 1986/87 season, the first under Ferguson in the dugout, when Manchester United were 19th out of 22 teams in the Premier League, and demotion to the Championship looked like a real possibility.
Sir Alex Ferguson arrived in the summer of 1986 after leading Scotland during the World Cup in Mexico. But the start to life at Old Trafford was not the most pleasant for the now 83-year-old, who even came close to the dismissal. Despite numerous problems in the squad, Ferguson was able to salvage his position and finish the season in 11th place with 56 points.
Although results improved over time, the Ferguson era continued to couple of rocky seasons at the beginning. In the 1989/1990 season, for example, the club also had 23 points after 20 rounds in the league and ended the campaign in 13th position with 48 points. But what followed were without a doubt Man United's golden years.
With the Scottish boss at the helm for 26 years, Manchester United won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two UEFA Champions League titles. However, having reached the peak of football in the 90s and 00s, things started to shift from 2014 onwards as United ended the 2013/14 season in 7th place - outside of the European places - a year after winning the league.
Years of inconsistency and struggles persecuted the club in the coming years but the situation particularly worsened in the last two seasons. In the previous term, the Red Devils had 31 points at this point of the campaign and ended up concluding in 8th place with 60 points - they would've been outside of the European spots if hadn't they won the FA Cup in the same season. Should they continue with the same rhythm under Amorim, another disappointing ranking in the table would be well in the cards at the end of this season.
