Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said that respect for diversity is part of Spain's DNA, in response to statements by Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr, in which he questioned the suitability of the country where he plays to host the 2030 World Cup due to racism in stadiums.
"The only thing I have to say is that our country is a country where respect for diversity is part of our DNA and, for this reason, our fight is effective and direct against all discriminatory behaviour," said the minister at a press conference in which he presented the summer accident figures when asked about the Brazilian player's statements.
The minister stressed in his appearance on Thursday that the fight against hate crime in general, but also in the field of sport, is one of the priorities of the Government and "obviously" of the Ministry of the Interior.
Marlaska went on to insist that the second Plan to combat hate crime has been implemented, which has been given more resources and has significantly strengthened collaboration with the Public Prosecutor's Office for hate crime and discrimination.
"In the field of sport, we are concerned and continue to work on the new instruction issued by the Secretary of State for Security to further clarify the role of the security coordinator within his or her competencies," he said.
