Claudrio Ranieri will be Roma's new coach. The club's decision, not yet official but already confirmed in Italy, comes after the option of Vincenzo Montella, also Italian and coach of Turkey, was complicated.
Ranieri, who retired from football last June after saving Cagliari, returns to a club he played for as a player in the 1973-74 season and as a coach in two different stages: first between 2009 and 2011 and then at the end of the 2018-19 season.
The coach, who has always had the respect of the Roma fans, especially angry with the board for recent events, travelled to London to meet with the Friedkin brothers, the club's owners, on Wednesday morning to finalise the deal.
He will stay until the end of the season and, after that, he will have a position on the board, Italian media reported. The board's choice of Ranieri after the crowded casting reflects a desire to placate the constant criticism with a man ‘from home’, capable also of having the respect of the dressing room, in need of a figure to hold on to in order to reverse the complicated situation.
Ranieri will be the third manager of the season and the fourth so far in 2024. In January, Portuguese Jose Mourinho was sacked ; in September, Italian Daniele de Rossi was sacked; and in November, Croatian Ivan Juric was sacked.
The former Valencia and Atletico Madrid coach, a Premier League champion with a historic Leicester side, will take charge of a team 12th in the table with just 13 points, four points clear of relegation.
On Thursday, he will lead his first training session, at 11am, with the players who are not called up to their respective national teams. He will make his Serie A debut on Sunday 24th November against leaders Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium.
