Dan Ashworth's time as Manchester United sporting director has ended after five short months as the club confirmed his departure on Sunday morning. The 53-year-old had only been appointed by the Red Devils in July as Sir Jim Ratcliffe oversaw numerous changes behind the scenes.
The club's official statement reads: "Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement. We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future".
The former Newcastle United sporting director's departure comes after Ratcliffe said on Saturday that Man United have become "mediocre" and that they shouldn't be afraid to make "difficult and unpopular decisions" if they want to return to the summit of English football.
Co owner Ratfliffe was reportedly called into a meeting with Omar Berrada, who also joined United in the summer, and agreed to relieve Ashworth of his duties at the club. Before arriving at Old Trafford, Ashworth held roles with Brighton, West Brom and the English Football Association (FA).
