Mateu Lahoz will not be among the referees selected for the Copa del Rey either. The Valencian is still suspended after his controversial refereeing of the Catalan derby at Camp Nou between Barcelona and Espanyol.
Mateu Lahoz was sanctioned by the Referees Committee for his performance in the Barcelona-Espanyol game. After two matchdays suspended, the Valencian referee will not be in the Copa del Rey round of 16 either, which already has a referee designation.
In total, the referee showed 16 yellow cards and sent off two players (Jordi Alba and Vinicius Souza). For this reason, the Referees' Committee sanctioned him with two league matchdays without refereeing, but it seems that the sanction will go further in the Copa del Rey competition.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed the refereeing appointments for all the matches in the round of 16 and Mateu is not present in any of them, neither as the main referee nor for the VAR. That is why he will not be present for the eight corresponding matches.
"Mateu is overcoming a complicated moment because we had hoped that he could referee a World Cup final for the first time in the history of Spanish football. It happened to me when I was left out of a final, it's tough," said Medina Cantalejo, president of the CTA.
