Pablo Mari, on loan at Monza from Arsenal, went to the Brianteo stadium to watch his team play Hellas Verona and he received an ovation from the fans after being stabbed just over two weeks ago.
The 29 year-old Spaniard was attacked while he was shopping with his partner and son by a 46 year-old Italian man who had mental problems. The man also stabbed five other people and one of them, a Carrefour shop worker, died on the way to hospital.
It is the first time the footballer has been seen in public since the attack. He has a sling over his left arm as a result of his injuries and the operation afterwards to reduce the muscle damage.
Monza CEO Adriano Galliani received Mari on the pitch while the home fans, who were starting to take their seats, gave him an ovation.
According to 'EFE', Mari will not be able to return to training for at least a month and a half so his recovery process will be during the 2022 World Cup break.
"The operation went well and he is expecting to be discharged in two or three days" and afterwards "the player will begin a rehabilitation process. This type of muscle injury usually requires two months rest before resuming physical activity," the medical report sent to 'EFE' said two weeks ago.
The author of the attack, identified as Andrea Tombolini, was being treated for medical problems. He explained that he felt "jealous" at seeing "all those happy people." He has been taken into a mental institution for the time being.
According to the local media, the man was arrested thanks to the intervention of the former football player Massimo Tarantino. The former Bologna, Inter and Napoli player managed to grab hold of him and pin him down until the police arrived.
