Neither side was able to break the stalemate in the first half at Anfield. It was Lisandro Martinez who opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with a thumping strike from a tight corner before Cody Gakpo cancelled the lead with another unsavable rocket just seven minutes later. But a balanced game saw a major twist when Alexander-Arnold's cross was met with De Ligt's arm. Referee Oliver was called by VAR to review the incident before he awarded Slot's men the penalty. Mo Salah stepped up to complete the comeback despite Onana's touch, but it was not enough to give his side the maximum points as Amad Diallo found the leveller with ten minutes left on the clock. Harry Maguire was presented the golden opportunity to score the winner, but United had to settle for a draw as the defender skied the shot off-target.
