After a long spell at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp left the dugout permanently last summer. Initially, it was not clear what the German's future would be, but a golden opportunity appeared in front of his eyes: to become the Global Director of Football for the Red Bull Group, owner of several clubs such as RB Leipzig, Salzburg or Bragantino.
Klopp did not hesitate long and took on this new challenge. However, his decision has been widely criticised in recent times, especially among German fans, as the politics of Red Bull and its influence in the football world is not to the liking of a large majority of German fans.
Much of the criticism has come from fans of Mainz 05, Klopp's first professional club before joining Borussia Dortmund">Borussia Dortmund and then Liverpool. Overwhelmed by all the noise, the now former coach came out in the podcast ‘Einfach mal Luppen’, hosted by the Kroos brothers, and defended his decision to take on the role and the new challenge it brings.
"I must say that I have never followed the whole narrative around Red Bull so critically," Jurgen began about the organisation's growth and transfer policy. "Other clubs have had the opportunity to sign talents like Willi Orban, Kevin Kampl or Yussuf Poulsen, who are now absolute legends of the club (RB Leipzig)," he said.
Klopp also said that other great players who are now out of the organisation such as Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konate or Christopher Nkunku could have ended up at other clubs and it was RB Leipzig who finally acquired their services to develop them and then sell them for a large sum of money. "That's how it works," the German commented on the strategy of the entities run by the famous energy drink brand.
