Juventus posted a €239m loss on Monday in a 2022 marked by its first year since 2011 in which it did not lift a title and by problems in investigations into the club's board of directors that resulted in 15 Serie A deduction points.
This was confirmed by John Elkann, cousin of former president Andrea Agnelli and CEO of Exor, the holding company that controls Juventus, in the letter to the shareholders of the Dutch commercial company.
"To a greater extent than many of our companies, in 2022 Juventus had to face increasing internal and external difficulties, which put the club to the test," he explained.
"Juventus recorded a significant loss of 239 million in the financial year and, for the first time since 2011, the men's team did not win any titles," he revealed.
However, Elkann put the spotlight on the investigations that the Turin Public Prosecutor's Office is carrying out under the name 'Prisma Investigation' into the creation of fictitious capital gains in market operations and salary moves with certain first-team players during the pandemic that were not included in the 2020 balance sheet.
"It was the legal actions against the club that eventually occupied the board, which met 18 times during the year. The level of pressure grew so great that the board decided to resign so that the club could protect themselves most effectively against accusations ranging from alleged accounting irregularities to inaccurate communications to the financial markets, mainly related to the buying and selling of players and agreements on players' salaries," he said.
This is also a key week as on Wednesday 19th April, the Italian Olympic Committee's College of Sporting Guarantee (CONI) will decide definitively whether or not to revoke the 15-point deduction imposed on the club at the end of January. Elkann was adamant about his position on the matter: "Juventus denies any irregularity," he said.
