Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Monday that James Rodriguez has terminated his contract with Rayo Vallecano. The Colombian gem was reportedly not happy with the situation at the club as he was not granted enough game time under Inigo Perez.
The Spanish capital side had pounced in for the former Real Madrid star following an outstanding Copa America display over the summer, bringing him in on a free deal from Sao Paulo. The transfer marked his return to the big leagues since leaving Everton as he had spells in Al Rayyan, Olympiacos and the Brazilian side.
However, the move that was supposed to reignite his career at the club level turned out to be a disaster as the midfielder was only afforded a single start in La Liga. From his seven games across all competitions - two as a starter - with the Rayo Vallecano outfit, Rodriguez only managed a single assist.
Having terminated his deal six months before its expiration date, James Rodriguez is a free agent once again and, at 33 years of age, he has only a few seasons left to commit to a destination that will allow him to demonstrate the level he has shown for his national team.
