Pep Guardiola revealed that John Stones will play a crucial role in Manchester City's must-win Champions League match against Club Brugge on Wednesday.
Stones has been struggling with injuries this season but the Englishman is being called up due to the unavailability of Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake in defence, as well as the ineligibility of new signings Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis. "He has to play," Guardiola stated, adding, "Unless he says to me he cannot play."
The England defender has not completed 90 minutes since October but is seen as vital to City's Champions League hopes. Guardiola admitted he would have to ‘invent’ a defensive solution if Stones cannot handle the game.
The manager also highlighted the fixture's importance, calling it a "final" for his team, who are at risk of an early exit from the competition. Stones' return comes after limited playing time in recent games, including his last appearance against Chelsea on Saturday where he replaced new signing Khusanov.
