With 30 goals in 39 appearances for Liverpool, the Egyptian forward has been instrumental in driving his team to the top of the Premier League and the last 16 of the Champions League.
Rio Ferdinand, speaking on TNT Sports, remarked: "Right now at this moment in time, I don't think there's anyone else on the podium with him." The former Manchester United defender believes he deserves the Ballon d'Or accolade for his contribution to the Reds' success.
However, Ferdinand also acknowledged that his chances of winning the prestigious award could hinge on Liverpool's progress in the Champions League. He explained: "I think with the way the Champions League works, as you get through the knockout stages and someone starts coming to the fore, they end up there. It comes down to moments in big games, really."
The former England international also mentioned several other contenders, including Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham, suggesting that big performances in the latter stages of the Champions League could tip the balance.
"Whoever keeps their status and turns up in the semi-finals and final will win it," he added.
