Harry Kane will be out for a "indefinite period" due to a calf injury he sustained during Bayern Munich's Champions League match against Celtic, the team confirmed in a statement.
During Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with the Scottish champions, the England captain, who has been playing well since moving to Bavaria in the summer, was substituted out at halftime.
Kane had been carrying a knock to his calf prior to the game, which has since grown into a haematoma, the club said in a statement.
This setback comes at a critical moment for the England national team, whose manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to announce his first squad next month, as well as Bayern Munich, who are currently in a close race for the Bundesliga title.
Kane's participation in future games is uncertain as the club has advised that he must "cut back over the coming days" in order to allow for a proper recovery.
The timing of Kane's return will be closely monitored by both club and country, with England's Euro 2024 preparations looming on the horizon.
