Dinamo Bucharest on Monday described as a fraud the news that the twin of former Barcelona player Edgar Miguel Ie, Edelino, had supplanted his brother in the team and announced legal action against the authors of the information.
"It is a fake, slanderous and cancerous attack against the club," the team said in a statement in response to the rumour started on social media that Edelino took the field pretending to be his twin last Sunday in the match between Dinamo Bucharest and FC UTA Arad, in the Romanian first division.
Dinamo have denied reports in the media that Edelino, not Edgar, joined the club last February from Feyenoord in Turkey.
The Romanian club assured that Edgar Ie was signed through a prestigious European sports agency and that transparency and legality prevailed throughout the process.
Dinamo explained in its statement that Edgar Miguel Ie received "an international transfer certificate issued by the Turkish Federation, verified by the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) and FIFA, registered by the Professional Football League (LPF). He also received a certificate of registration from the General Immigration Inspectorate (IGI)".
The story emerged when a Romanian journalist reported that Dinamo Bucharest had been surprised that the player did not speak English well and only communicated in Portuguese, despite having previously played in Spain, France, Turkey and the Netherlands.
Dinamo have said they have initiated proceedings to sue the author of this false information "for serious damage to the club's image".
Edgar Miguel Ie is a 30-year-old Portuguese footballer who signed for Sporting CP when he was just 14 in 2008 and for Barcelona's reserve team in 2012. He also played for Nantes.
