Kylian Mbappe has led the French national team with the armband on since March 2023, when the French Football Association (FFF) announced that he would be taking over from Hugo Lloris. The former PSG player's captaincy had been fairly smooth, but has now been subject of debate due to his absence from the last two camps.
The Real Madrid forward has not been involved in consecutive international breaks. In October, Mbappe was unavailable on the premise that he had elected to recover from a minor injury, however, for the latest squad, Deschamps simply explained that it was a 'one-off decision' to snub the 25-year-old after "a couple of talks."
'L'Equipe' now report that the France boss is planning to meet up with Mbappe to discuss the future of his captaincy. With four months left until the next internationals, Mbappe will be given the choice of whether to conitnue wearing the armband or give it up for someone else.
In his absence over the past two international breaks Aurelien Tchouameni - twice - N'Golo Kante and Ibrahima Konate - both once - have all rotated the captain's armband. The Liverpool defender's display as captain in France's lastest 3-1 win against Italy has reportedly impressed the French Association, so much so that he is said to have been noted as potential future captain.
