'Sport' claims that Barcelona's plan is to close Memphis Depay's departure in the winter transfer window to free up a place in Xavi Hernandez's squad and reinforce it. This was already close to happening in the summer, but, in the end, the Dutchman opted to stay.

The first half of the season is almost over and Memphis Depay has only made three appearances for Barcelona. His drop in prominence is evident and he is satisfied with that. In the summer, he had the opportunity to leave and didn't want to, but now the situation is different. According to 'Sport', the priority of the offices of the Camp Nou is to release him in winter.
He agrees in principle. At the moment, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are the ones most interested in him. Previously, he attracted a lot of attention in Serie A, where teams such as Juventus considered signing him, which was unsuccessful due to his refusal to leave the Catalan giants in the final hours of the last transfer window. Looking ahead to the January window, it is more likely that he will agree to leave Xavi's side.
The Barcelona bosses' idea is that there should be no more departures when the squad can be strengthened. Gerard Pique's retirement was an unexpected exit and it seemed that the board would be looking to bring in a new defender in the coming months, but the versatility of Marcos Alonso has led to second thoughts and the conclusion that it may be best to wait until Athletic's Inigo Martinez is released in 2023.
As for Memphis Depay's departure, it makes the most sense for it to happen for free, as it is the way he arrived after leaving Olympique Lyon and he is only tied to the club until the summer of next year. Giving up those six months to make it easier for him to find a new destination seems like the most likely scenario.
