The 15-year-old Mathis, currently part of Watford's academy, has impressed scouts with his technical ability and versatility. According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have initiated discussions with the player's inner circle, signalling their intent to bring him to Cobham ahead of fierce competition from other clubs.
However, any move for the young Eboue will require Chelsea to pay a development fee under the Premier League's five-step compensation rule. The regulation, designed to prevent breaches of Youth Development Rules, ensures fair reimbursement to Watford for their role in Mathis's training and progression.
The compensation could prove a sticking point, as Watford reportedly value the teenager highly and are keen to hold onto him. Nonetheless, the Stamford Bridge outfit's track record of developing young talent and providing a pathway to first-team football is believed to appeal to Mathis and his entourage.
This potential transfer adds a fascinating twist, as Mathis’s father, Emmanuel Eboue, was a fan favourite at Chelsea's London rivals Arsenal during his playing days. Should the deal go through, it would represent a symbolic coup for the Blues and a significant step in their ongoing investment in youth development.
