Real Madrid can let out a sigh of relief as Vinicius Junior will be able to partake in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Mallorca this week. Confirmation arrived on Tuesday as the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Disciplinary Committee handed the Brazilian a two-match suspension.
The Ballon d'Or runner-up, who will now miss the La Liga fixtures against Las Palmas and Valladolid, was sent off in the 79th minute of the league game against Valencia last Friday after slapping goalkeeper Dimitrievski. Further controversy was caused as Vinicius refused to leave the pitch and had to be forced off by his teammates.
There was a lot of speculation over the presumed length of the Madrid No.7's sanction following his violent conduct, nevertheless, the two bodies have deemed two games as an appropriate punishment for "deliberately striking an opponent on the head, without the ball being in play and using non-negligible force".
The Disciplinary Committee followed the RFEF words with the following justification: ‘Vinicius Junior is suspended for two matches for violent conduct on the fringes of play, not being in a position to contest the ball or the stoppage of play. In addition, an additional fine of €700 is imposed on the club and €600 on the offender".
