Barcelona mourned on Monday, via social media and its website, the death of former Dutch footballer Johan Neeskens, who wore the Azulgrana shirt between 1974 and 1979, and later returned to the club as assistant coach to Frank Rijkaard between 2006 and 2008.
"FC Barcelona deeply regrets the death of Johan Neeskens. An FC Barcelona legend who will always be in our memory. May he rest in peace," the Catalan club said on its official Twitter account.
Neeskens, who has died at the age of 73, played 183 games and scored 44 goals during his five seasons as a midfielder for the Azulgranas, a club where he left a lasting impression on the fans for his commitment, physical strength and power, especially in his headers and penalty kicks.
