A relatively even game saw the Gunners head into the break with the lead. Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring in the 35th minute as he stretched to net Trossard's cross despite Dibu Martinez's best attempt to keep it out. Kai Havertz doubled Arsenal's lead ten minutes into the second period but Villa scored twice within 10 minutes with Yuri Tielemnas and Ollie Watkins to bring the match to a level. Mikel Merino thought he had handed Arteta the win at the 87th minute, but his goal was ruled out by VAR as the ball touched Havertz's arm on its way in.
